Understanding the Facts about Poker Tells

There are a lot of ways that the good Pokier players beat the less experienced ones, and among the most well utilized is that of tells, the physical reactions and mannerism that often give away the player's hand. However, there is a lot more to it than most assume.

The fact is that while anyone, even a new player, may be able to spot a Poker tell, exactly what it is saying or hinting at will not be clear except for someone who is well versed in the art of player reading. As an example, a player may notice that his opponent's fingers are trembling. A lot of people believe that this is a sign that the person is holding a monster hand.

For the most part, this is an accurate Poker tell. Players, especially the new ones, tend to exhibit this mannerism when holding the nuts. But this is not always the case; in some instances it could signify someone who is dismayed at the hands he is holding. If he made a large bet and got a marginal hand, then that could be the reason for the trembling.

Yet another possibility is that he is bluffing. A lot of players today know that that Poker tell indicates a strong hand, so he may be using that tactic to deceive the other players on the table.

Other Poker tells that you will often see on the table include a change in the voice or the demeanor of the player, such as when he stops speaking or sits back, or leans towards his stack. Those who sit back can mean someone has a big hand. Why? Because by sitting back he is feigning disinterest in the hand, as if he has nothing.

As you can see, the art of using Poker tells can be complex. The fact that the Internet has made it easier for people to learn what the physical mannerisms connote have made people more wary of how they behave.

However, that does not mean you cannot use Poker tells anymore; the reason is that most of these actions are involuntary and natural. Most new players do not even notice that they are doing it.

The way to read them properly is by repeated playing. Only by using this method will you be able to assess if the guy who always takes off his hat or looks at his watch is holding a strong or marginal hand. However, if you persevere, you will eventually learn to recognize the traits, and use Poker tells to your benefit.
